The best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to experience, but overall the most popular and rewarding period is the dry season.

Currency and Foreign Exchange

Kenya’s official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), used for all daily transactions. 

Foreign currencies—especially US Dollars, Euros, and British Pounds—are accepted at major hotels, safari lodges, airports, and tour operators, but Kenyan shillings are preferred for local purchases.  US dollar notes issued after 2009 are typically required.

Money can be exchanged at banks, licensed forex bureaus, hotels, and airports, with forex bureaus often offering better rates.  ATMs are widely available in cities and accept major international cards, while card payments are common in urban areas.

Visitors are advised to carry some cash, especially when traveling outside major towns.

 

Languages in Kenya

Kenya is extremely multilingual, with more than 60 languages spoken across the country. However, the country has two official languages. Swahili (Kiswahili) is both the national and an official language and is spoken widely across Kenya, while English is an official language used primarily in government, education, and business.

 

Passports and Visa

Visitors to Africa must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date, together with onward travel documents, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds for the duration of your stay.

Please also ensure that you have sufficient blank visa pages (not endorsement pages) in your passport, with at least 2 consecutive/side by side blank pages.  Our recommendation is 3 pages (or even 4 if you are travelling through more than one country on your journey).
